First and foremost, start the process early! It can take anywhere from weeks to months to land the ideal coop position, be sure to start at least 3-4 months in advance to ensure you have a job lined up in time.
Best ways to land a co-op placement:
- School Assisted Approach – When the co-op recruitment cycle begins, check the OSCAR website frequently for job postings, which is accessible through the Science Career and Co-operative Education office. Many employers who have a good relationship with the school, have hired students in the past, or decided to hire students for the first time, frequently send their co-op job postings to universities. Government, academia, industry, and private sector frequently hire co-op students through the McMaster Science Career and Co-operative Education office.
- Personalized Job Approach – Students approach potential employers, particularly professors whose research interests you. The Science Career and Co-operative Education office can provide guidance and help you with personalized job search, including resume and cover letter reviews, mock interviews, and potential employer contact information.
What happens if I cannot find a co-op?
In the over 30 years of the program, this has only happened a few times. Sometimes, due to no fault of the student, things just don’t quite line up, or have significant delays. If you find yourself in this situation, reach out to the Science Co-op office early for advice on the next steps. Flexibility is key- this may involve moving locations to accommodate a job opportunity, changing your search approach or even consider flipping an academic semester for a coop semester. Please be sure to reach out to the Program Office early for further support.
